The discovery of the short documentary Kastoria (1969) by renowned Thessaloniki-born director Takis Kanellopoulos, a rare film long considered lost, marks a joyous moment for Greek documentary cinema. Kastoria, the final part of Kanellopoulos’ informal “Macedonian Trilogy” — which also includes Macedonian Wedding (1960) and Thasos (1961) — holds a central place in this year’s Festival tribute titled "Geography of the Gaze: Off-plan Greece (1950-2000)". In a special event, Kastoria is screened for the first time in decades, followed by a discussion with younger-generation viewers who are rediscovering Kanellopoulos’ unique voice. At the same time, the curators of the tribute unravel the story of the film’s rediscovery, linking it to the core question posed by the program: how is the spirit of a place – particularly the Greek countryside – captured through the distinctive artistic gaze of significant Greek filmmakers? The event will begin with the screening of Kastoria (duration 24’). A discussion in Greek will follow, with simultaneous interpretation into English.
