OPENING OF CONSTANTINOS KAKANIAS' EXHIBITION

48TH THESSALONIKI FILM FESTIVAL
November 16-25 2007

OPENING OF CONSTANTINOS KAKANIAS’ EXHIBITION

Constantinos Kakanias’ solo exhibition “Split (higher and higher)” which opened today, Saturday November 17th at the Kalfayan gallery in the framework of the 48th Thessaloniki Film Festival deals with the tragic existential void of our times.

George Corraface, the president of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, spoke about the unique way with which the artist expresses his humor through the solemn look of his protagonists’ faces.

In his installation, the artist has collected and placed objects – keepsakes of the recent adventures of the mythical Mrs. Tependri, the heroine of his recent works. These are object of daily use – mobile phones, make-up, matresses, liquor, cigarettes – which came about, as Kakanias explained, from Mrs. Tependri’s company with people such as Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.

With a sharp sense of humor, Constantinos Kakanias attempts to approach and analyze the phenomenon of a split personality, which modern psychology considers a mental condition, by presenting the human side of Mrs. Tependri which this time confronts depression, drugs, the world of gigolos and Hollywood.

The exhibition “Split (higher and higher)” is part of an exhibition which is essentially split between two cities, Athens and Thessaloniki, at the Kalfayan gallery. The exhibition express two different personalities which co-exist in the same mind, two versions of the subject of despair and mental disorder.

In Athens, the exhibition “Lower and lower” concerns the “ageless” problems of childhood and the fake morality of our society which creates “suffering adults”, as the artist mentioned.

At the same time, at the location of the 48th Thessaloniki Film Festival by the port’s entrance, the artist has installed a huge inflatable sculpture of Mrs. Tependri using it to welcome the Festival’s guests.

The opening of the exhibition was also attended by actress Themis Bazaka and the president of the 1st Municipal District Tolis Veizades. The exhibition will be open until December 15th.
