Exhibition “Caritas Romana: 15 Acts of Devotion”

Based on the “caritas romana” concept of this year’s International Competition section, TIFF invited 15 young Greek artists to watch the IC films and create 15 original works for each one of them. These will be presented for the first time in the festival’s main exhibition, organized by TIFF in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Centre of Thessaloniki with the support of NEON Organisation. The participating artists are: Dimitris Ameladiotis, Dimitris Efeoglou, Zoe Giabouldaki, Elias Kafouros, Anastasia Mina, Malvina Panagiotidi, Nefeli Papadimouli, Valia Papastamou, Kostas Pappas, Alexandra Petranaki, Hara Piperidou, Lysimachos Polychronidis, Nana Sachini, Babis Venetopoulos, Ioanna Ximeri. The interactive project “Face Forward …into my home” focuses on the stories of refugees via storytelling workshops. The program is proposed by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) and implemented with the collaboration of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Following its first presentation in Athens, it travelled to Heraklion, Crete, and is now hosted in Thessaloniki, with the support of the Thessaloniki Int’l Film Festival. Exhibition Moving Image - 4th Artists In Residence Program by Eagles Palace

The exhibition of the Artists in Residence Program by Eagles Palace (ARP) presents the works created during this innovative residency which takes place every year in Ouranoupoli, Halkidiki. This year, in its fourth edition in May 2018, the focus of the ARP was on the moving image. Eight visual artists and filmmakers were hosted at Eagles Palace where they experimented with the medium, covering a wide range of practices of the moving image. The exhibition is organized by Eagles Palace and curated by Aliki Tsirliagkou.

Photo exhibition #CedefopPhotoAward 2018

#CedefopPhotoAward is a photography competition organised by Cedefop, the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training, and endorsed by the European Commission. For the 2018 edition, Cedefop asked teams of vocational education and training learners in the European Union, Norway and Iceland, to share their experiences through original photo stories. The first, second and third prize winning stories, along with the 17 runners-up, be exhibited at the Cinema Museum of Thessaloniki during the 59th TIFF. The exhibition is organized by Cedefop and curated by TIFF and Cedefop.
Cinema for All – Accessibility format screenings
The 59th TIFF hosts two accessibility format screenings for two of the Greek Queer Cinema tribute’s films: Meteor and Shadow by Takis Spetsiotis (1985) and A Woman’s Way by Panos H. Koutras (2009). These films will be screened with audio description [AD] for the blind and visually impaired and SDH [Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing] (curation and certification by the Movement of Disabled Artists). The project is collaboration between TIFF with the Onassis Foundation and the Onassis Cultural Centre as accessibility sponsors. Accessibility conditions are implemented in collaboration with the Movement of Disabled Artists.
Discussion: “Greek Queer Cinema, An Oral Story”

Some of the protagonists of what we now define as Greek queer cinema guide us though their difficult, but also extremely creative past. They talk about films, lost friends, but also about everything that lives in collective memory; all that is now part of a special story that it is time to be told.
Jordan Ananiadis Masterclass

On the occasion of the festival’s tribute to the work of multi-awarded Greek animator Jordan Ananiadis, the Thessaloniki-born director will share the secrets of animation filmmaking with the audience.
Alfonso Villalonga Concert “Music for Films & Cabaret”

Celebrated Spanish composer Alfonso Villalonga, also a member of the international jury of the 59th TIFF, will present a special concert with songs he wrote for films such as Isabel Coixet’s The Bookshop, as well as other Cabaret and Chanson Française songs. He will be accompanied by the Spanish guitarist Pau Figueras, the singer and trombonist Rita Payés and a String Quartet of Greek musicians led by Andonis Sousamoglou of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.
Asian Cinema Music

The Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra presents soundtracks by Ryuichi Sakamoto, John Williams, Shigeru Umebayashi and other acclaimed composers for beloved Asian films such as The Last Emperor, Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Little Buddha, and many more. The concert is conducted by Georgios Vranos and organized in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

Homoerotic Poetry: Sensitivity, A Disease

An improvisational approach to the (post) queer theme of the writer and director Thomas Diafas, "Homoerotic Poetry" is the stage version of his same title book that deals with the issues of sexuality and power.

Professor and President of the Acropolis Museum Dimitris Pantermalis will make a brief introduction to the guests of the 59th Festival about the cultural and artistic value of the Parthenon marbles and the importance of their return to the monument.
