The selection of the Official Programme:

The selection of the films of the Official Programme is, according to Despina Mouzaki, “not based on the principle of subject matter, but on the freshness of vision which reveals not only how comfortable new directors are with the language of cinema, or how willing they are to experiment with it, but also how they perceive human existence and the daily confrontation with the social problems that surround it”.

“This year the International Competition section”, says the director of the festival, “ perhaps more than ever, leans towards the adventure of narrative. It creates a world of vital stories,

which film makers from four continents believe they must tell at any cost. A world which begins geographically from the north of Europe, passes through the neighbouring Mediterranean Africa, opens to the Far East and concludes in North and South America.”

The programme

Below, you will find additional up to date practical information as well as the dates for a number of scheduled events:

Independence Days-ID 06

This official parallel section of the Thessaloniki Int’l Film Festival presents its second edition headed by programmer and film critic Lefteris Adamidis.

Focusing on independent filmmaking by young and provocative talent regardless of subject matter or geographic area ID 06 is composed of 40 plus films from the 2005-2006 crop introduced in several sub-sections. Highlights include the two masterpieces from the New Crowned Hope film series, Tsai Ming Liang’s I Don’t want to Sleep Alone and Apitchatpong Weerasethakul’s Syndromes and A Century, the surprising Kubrador coming from Philippines, Pablo Trapero’s brand new Born and Bred and the impressive Das Fraulein by newcomer Andrea Staka, winner of this year’s Locarno Golden Leopard.

For the second year, one of the films included in the Independence Days section will be honored with the Human Values Award (cash prize of Euros 15,000) which is sponsored by the television channel of the Hellenic Parliament. Last year’s recipient of the award was Gavin Hood’s Tsotsi, the film form South Africa that a few months later went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Greek Films 2006

This section traditionally showcases the local productions of the year. On this occasion it includes 18 full-length fiction films, 4 documentaries, as well as the award winning shorts from the Short Film Festival in Drama. The participating films are eligible for the State Cinema

Awards handed out the day after the closing of the TIFF. This year’s production is characterized by a great variation in style and subject matter, while the ever increasing trend of new film makers toward realism is prominent, sometimes using a twisted, playful style and other times attacking the established views and stereotypes of modern Greek society.

New this year in this traditional section steered by film director Thanos Anastopoulos is the introduction of DigitalWave, a competitive programme reserved for digital works, featuring the selection of ten films shot in formats that run the gamut from mobile telephones to HD. The programme aims to give young directors, and those who feel young, a platform, to urge them to broaden their means of expression and to re-examine cinema structures, beginning from the system of production and technical processing, up to the new distribution scene that is being created by the gradual take-over of digital technology.

A special award has been created for this section.  Worth Euros 15,000 it is offered by the Greek Film Centre while another award will be offered by Nokia N series.

Running parallel to the DigitalWave the festival will present a Focus on the pioneering collective digital effort of French origine Kourtrajmé.

The "collectif Kourtrajmé productions", founded by Romain Gavras, Kim Chapiron and Toumani Sangaré, is a wild bunch of 100 plus video directors, actors, musicians, dancers and experts in internet sound and design, a " jubilatory new new wave" as legendary French film maker Chris Marker calls them. Their work is fresh, urgent, instinctive, trashily humorous, iconoclastic and gutsy. Their quirky energy, unstoppable creativity and uncompromising

independent spirit should be an electro shocking inspiration to the new generation of film makers in Greece and more widely in south-east Europe.

The Focus will include the screening of about 90 minutes of a selection of "Kourtrajmé" productions and finally by a vibrant party featuring one of "Kourtrajmé's" favorite DJs in alliance with a Greek DJ.

Parallel to contemporary production, the Greek programme will feature a series of films on Immigration in Greek Cinema (1956-2006) as well as retrospectives to the work of two veteran Greek directors, Stavros Tsiolis and Dimos Theos and will pay tribute during a whole day to the legendary local film director Alexis Damianos who died last May. His films Until the Ship Sails, Evdokia and Eniochos will be screened as well as an episode of the television series Patouchas and one from Strange Voyager.  There will also be screenings of documentaries by Greek film directors on his life and work as well as a selection of scenes from his films in which Damianos appears as an actor.  His former close collaborator, director Lakis Papastathis will also present his book “When Damianos was filming Evdokia”.

Balkan Survey

For the 13th year in a row, the “Balkan Survey” section, curated by film theorist Dimitris Kerkinos, will present a selection of the most significant Balkan films of the year.

This year’s Balkan Survey programme is dedicated to the late Cristian Nemescu, to honor the memory of this talented young Romanian  director and dear friend of the Thessaloniki Film Festival who left us last summer after a fatal car accident . His film Marilena de la P7, will be presented in the main Balkan programme, as well as his last, unfinished film California Dreaming in the Balkan Works in Progress section.

The latter is a new subsection held in cooperation with the Agora (the TIFF Film Market) giving the opportunity to selected sales agents, distributors and festival programmers to discover projects from the entire Balkan region, entering the post-production stage. At the same time, it gives the opportunity to film producers to receive valuable feedback regarding the commercial potential of their film and to also find distribution.

For the second consecutive year, an audience award of Euros 2,000 will be given to the most popular film of the section.

Also, the presentation of a new book on Balkan cinema, edited by Professor Dina Iordanova, suitably titled, 24 Frames: The Balkans, will be held during the festival.

The Olympion Cinema Complex, which houses the Olympion 1 and Olympion 2-Pavlos Zannas cinema theaters is the site of the official screenings of the Festival.

Conveniently located in the city port, within walking distance from the Olympion Cinema Complex and the main hotels where the guests will be housed, is the multimedia cultural center, The Pier (Provlita).

The Pier includes:

-The John Cassavetes, Tonia Marketaki, Frida Liappa and Stavros Tornes theaters where the festival screenings will take place.

-The Warehouse C (Apothiki Gama) which will house the Administration offices, Public relations and the Independence Days office, the Guest and Press Services, as well as the International Program and Foreign Press offices and the Jameson Club.

-The Warehouse 8 where the Industry Centre will be housed.

The Festival’s Meeting Point where a restaurant, coffee shop and bar are to operate during the event can be found in the upper floor of Warehouse C.

New this year is the addition of three more cinema theatres to the venues of the festival to better serve the needs of the guests.

They are,

The completely refurbished Vakoura 1 (540 seats) and Vakoura 2 (120 seats) at I. Mihail  street, corner of D.Gounari street off Egnatia Avenue (Please check map in the A-Z festival publication), a short 10 minute walk from the Olympion.

The two theatres will host repeat screenings of such sections as the Official Programme (In and out of competition, Special Screenings), the Chinese and Brazilian Homages, Wim Wenders, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Stavros Tsiolis, Dimos Theos as well as the Greek subsection showcasing films focusing on immigration

The 100 seater Manolis Andronikos hall, a digital video screening facility, named after the renowned late Greek architect who unearthed the famous archeological findings of Vergina related to king Philippos, the father of Alexander the Great.

The hall is located in the city’s Archeological Museum near  the Thessaloniki International Fair, close to the Macedonia Palace hotel. (Please check map in  the A-Z festival publication),

A shuttle bus will be available for guests wishing to attend screenings there (the Greek Digital Wave and Wim Wenders documentaries).

As in the past two years an extra cinema theater will again be reserved exclusively  for press and industry  screenings at the Plateia multiplex off the Olympion..

Upon their accreditation, festival guests will be furnished with detailed information as to each cinema theater’s program.

Ticketing Policy for Foreign Press

The press badge allows access to all screenings and events, unless otherwise specified.

Please note however, that it is necessary to obtain 0 value tickets for entrance to all screenings except for the Press Screenings at the Plateia. These tickets can be obtained both on the screening date and up to 2 days in advance of the screening at the Olympion, Marketaki and Frida Liappa theaters.
