With less than a week to go before the start of the event, we have the pleasure to contact you with the latest news from this year’s 53rd Thessaloniki International Film Festival, which kicks off this Friday, November 2nd.

OPENING & CLOSING FILMS
Opening film Friday, November 2nd: Holy Motors by Leos Carax (France/Germany, 2012, 115’)
Closing film Saturday, November 10th: In Another Country by Hong Sang-soo (Da-reun na-ra-e-suh, Korea, 2012, 89’)

The five-member International Jury called to judge the films of the International Competition section and to award the Golden and Silver Alexanders plus a number of additional awards, is composed of:

Round Table Discussion on Theo Angelopoulos – Thursday 8/11, John Cassavetes Theatre, 12:00 – 14:00
Several of Angelopoulos’ regular collaborators throughout the years will participate in the discussion, providing an insider’s view on the unique way the late Greek auteur prepared and shot his films.
EXHIBITIONS
Freeze Frame in European Cinema – Photography Exhibition
2-11/11/2012, Warehouse C, Pier
During the 53rd TIFF, the Thessaloniki Cinematheque will be inaugurated, to be housed in the Thessaloniki Film Museum at the Pier. On this occasion, a photography exhibition with 57 black and white stills from milestone European films, by directors such as Theodor Dreyer, Andrei Tarkovsky and Luis Bunuel, will be showcased in Warehouse C.
Stitches Without Thread: Multiple-screening installation by Antoinetta Angelidi

Greek filmmaker and visual artist Antoinetta Angelidi presents a multiple-screening composition on the themes of time and creation, with images, words, and sounds from her films. By altering their synthesis, rhythm and structure, and projecting them in every corner of a three-dimensional gallery, she constructs new meanings and new ways to view narrative.
Rania Rangou: Noble Lies & Tracey Snelling: Nothing

Artist Rania Rangou, in her new solo exhibition, uses collage, photographic prints and painting in an exploration of how the past relates with their present, on the possibilities for original creation and on the “noble lies” of History.
Tracey Snelling’s video, Nothing, narrates the story of a young woman who is trapped in a life she doesn’t want. The artist’s fascinating work is built with rich sound landscapes, intense colors and unique locations. The video has been presented in various art spaces and film venues all over the world, such as the San Francisco Film Society.
CONCERTS
Music and Songs for Theo Angelopoulos’ Films

The Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra present Music and Songs for Theo Angelopoulos’ Films as part of the 53rd TIFF Tribute to the director. Angelopoulos’ regular composer Eleni Karaindrou and singer Dimitra Galani, along with the Thessaloniki State Orchestra and the jazz trio Human Touch, will perform musical themes from films such as The Beekeeper, Voyage to Cythera, The Suspended Step of the Stork and Eternity and a Day. Angelopoulos and Karaindrou collaborated on numerous films, forging a unique bond and creating a powerful connection between the director’s images and her distinctive melodies.
The Souljazz Orchestra
Saturday 3/11, Warehouse C, 21:00, free entrance
The TIFF presents one of Canada’s funkiest bands, in a concert organized by Exostis magazine and with the support of the Onassis Cultural Centre. The Souljazz Orchestra, which fuses Soul, Jazz, Afro and Latin melodies and rhythms, is a collective featuring musicians from all over the world. Having released its newest album, “Solidarity”, the band is in the middle of its worldwide tour, stopping at Thessaloniki for only one day.
